Projects
Greenwood, MS
The Carl Small Town Center created a master plan for Greenwood’s Baptist Town neighborhood to improve the neighborhood housing conditions and promote economic development in the area.
Marks, MS
In July 2015, the Carl Small Town Center at Mississippi State University was awarded a $25,000 Our Town grant by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to create a trail and make plans for an interpretive center in Marks that tells the story of the 1968 Mule Train.
Aberdeen, MS
In partnership with the CREATE Foundation of northeast Mississippi, the Carl Small Town Center’s 2017 CREATE Common Ground project focused on pedestrian infrastructure in Aberdeen, Mississippi.
Ripley, MS
In August 2017, the Carl Small Town Center (CSTC) at Mississippi State University kicked off a nine-month planning process which resulted in a master plan for the City of Ripley, a small town in Tippah County, Mississippi.
Houston, MS
In 2015, the CSTC worked with the community of Houston, Mississippi to develop a strategy that capitalizes on Houston’s location as the southern terminus of the Tanglefoot Trail.
Meridian, MS
After receiving a National Park Service grant in 2018, the Wechsler Foundation hired the Carl Small Town Center at Mississippi State University to engage local residents and community leaders to create a new vision for the Wechsler School building that reflects the needs of the local community and celebrates Meridian’s Civil Rights heritage.
Laurel, MS
In 2018, the Carl Small Town Center met with Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee and representatives of Laurel Main Street and Neel-Schaffer to discuss potential design projects in downtown Laurel. The group selected an underutilized park on the corner of West 5th Street and Magnolia Street across from the U.S. Post Office.
Crystal Springs, MS
As part of its Brownfields Assessment Grant, the City of Crystal Springs is planning for the future of the Market Gateway, a transportation corridor that leads from Exit 72 of Interstate 55 into downtown Crystal Springs along Highways 27 and 51.
Quitman County, MS
When leaders in Quitman County, Mississippi realized that their 1973 zoning ordinance was no longer producing the type of development the community was looking for, they contacted the Carl Small Town Center to re-write their code.
